Sanguine Estate has released its sixth vintage of Shiraz, the 2005 Sanguine Estate Heathcote Shiraz. Good soaking rain over winter, a long hot summer and an unusually dry cool Autumn ensued a long, slow ripening period resulting in a full flavour development and optimum balance between sugar, acid and tannin.
James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2008.
“Extremely rich, dense and concentrated in the main Heathcote style.: blackberry, liquorice, plum and spice: fine but lingering tannins: hard to deny. Screwcap. 14.8% alcohol. Rating 94. To 2030”

The wine is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 12% Petit Verdot and 9% Merlot. This is the first vintage of this blend that Sanguine has produced and the result is impressive.
At bottling, the wine showed excellent structure and depth with ripe black currant and raspberry fruits on the palate, silky tannins and a lingering finish of dark chocolate and liquorice.
James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2008.
“A masculine, muscular, earthy wine but not on steroids: blackcurrant, blackberry and cedar; has length and the tannins are controlled. Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc / Petit Verdot / Merlot. Cork. 14.8O alcohol. Rating 90. To 2018”

Overall 2006 was one of our best vintages to date with a long, warm summer providing ideal ripening conditions for all grape varieties. However, poor fruit set for the Tempranillo severely restricted yields and prompted us to search the Heathcote region for a suitable source of good Tempranillo fruit. This purchase of hand picked fruit has, we are pleased to report, added to the complexity and quality of our 2006 Tempranillo and provided more wine to sell.
Reviews are pending.
At time of publication, reviews are pending for this particular release. However, it’s predecessor the 2005 Heathcote Tempranillo was awarded 91/100 and by James Halliday in his 2008 Australian Wine Companion and consequently sold out. Needless to say, we are very excited about this new vintage. |

Reviews are pending.
Very favourable vintage conditions prevailed during the entire growing season enabling us to pick the chardonnay grapes at the optimum point of balance between flavour and natural acidity.
At bottling the 2006 Chardonnay showed attractive barrel ferment complexity, restrained fruit with citrus and melon overtones, in balance with crisp acidity and a pleasingly dry finish. Oak is very subtle on the palate.

On Sanguine Estate there are 3 distinct vineyards namely the Sanguine mixed block , the flagship Sanguine Shiraz vineyard and the Progeny Shiraz vineyard.
The Sanguine mixed block contains 8 different varieties and is used for testing the suitability of non Shiraz varieties to the Heathcote terroir and for blending options.
The flagship Sanguine Shiraz vineyard and Sanguine Mixed block are located on the acclaimed 510 million year old Cambrian Earth belt whilst the Progeny Vineyard has mainly sandy loam soils. Amazingly, despite the same winemaking techniques and similar oak regime, the Progeny Shiraz and the Sanguine Shiraz wines are very different.
The Progeny Shiraz wines tend to portray darker fruit characters and are considered more tannic than the Sanguine Shiraz wines but still maintain the same mouthfilling structure and long finish. Some of our customers prefer the Progeny Shiraz whilst others prefer the Sanguine Shiraz – it’s a matter of taste.
Winestate’s Best Wines of 2007 – Annual Edition
“Nose of prunes, laced with licorice. Full, ripe, rich, chocolaty palate with lovely long structure. Again lots of tannic grip. Cellar 3 – 5”
The exciting part of this review was that there were over 8,000 wines tasted and our Progeny was included in The Best Wines of 2007 – Style category.

"The palate is explosive - an essay of liquorice, plum, spice and black pepper overlaid by blood plum…the 2002 Shiraz assures Sanguine Estate's standing as one of Heathcote's great vineyards."
Robert Parker Junior Rating: 92 out of 100
"While there are some notable exceptions (Wild Duck for example), I am generally not as impressed with Shiraz from Heathcote as that from Barossa and McLaren Vale. Sanguine's 2002 Shiraz is another exception."
Ralph Kyte-Powell and Huon Hooke Rating:
4½glasses + 4stars value
" A hot-blooded wine for hot-blooded red lovers. This single-vineyard shiraz is a new kid on the block: we wish every new wine that came along was this good…. ."
James Halliday Rating: 90 out of 100
“Densely coloured; archetypal Heathcote, ultra-rich and plush…”
Max Allen
"One of the most impressive of Heathcote's many new wine labels, Sanguine has only one wine at this stage, but what a wine it is....." |

Nicks Wine Merchants Rating: 98 out of 100
"Sanguine Estate continues to produce exceptional full bodied Shiraz from their Heathcote vineyard. The yields are miniscule, which are reflective of the drought conditions that have become a fact of life in the district. As a result, the fruit produced tends to be super concentrated - bordering on being an essence of the Shiraz grape."
Steven Tanzer ( USA) Rating: 91 out of 100
"Full ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of black fruits, pepper, spices and licorice; very syrah. Juicy, spicy and bright, firm and precise but also pliant and generous. Classic black fruit and peppery syrah flavors complicated by candied notes and exotic herbs. Carries its 15% alcohol gracefully. Finishes firm, sweet and long."
James Halliday (Aust) Rating: 91 out of 100
“Fresh, clean blackberry, spice and plum aromas; very ripe, sweet fruit shows its 14.5º alcohol; ripe tannins.”
Huon Hooke (Aust) Rating: 91 out of 100
”Another stunning Heathcote shiraz…”

Sanguine Estate has released its fifth vintage of Shiraz, the 2004 Sanguine Estate Heathcote Shiraz. In contrast to the 2003 vintage, good winter rains ensured that the soil moisture levels were high at the beginning of the 2004 growing season. A hot dry January/February hastened ripening and resulted in flavour ripe fruit at lower than normal baume levels.
Aromatically this wine is the best we have produced so far and a significant increase in the ratio of new French oak has resulted in a more pronounced tannin structure on the palate that augurs well for cellaring potential.
Nicks Wine Merchants Rating: 94 out of 100
"The 2004 Sanguine Estate Shiraz is showing more elegance and refinement than previous vintages. Opaque black purple colour with purple crimson hue. Perfumed nose of redcurrant, violets, blackcurrant, blackberry and plum. The palate has good weight, with flavours of plum emerging over freshly crushed blackberries followed by a touch of raspberry and black pepper on the back palate. Soft tannins. Aftertaste of raspberry, plum and blackberry.
Cellar 3-4 years (2008-2009) VALUE FOR MONEY: 4 ½ /5”

Sanguine Estate ’s 2004 Tempranillo is exclusive to mailing list customers . Tempranillo is the principle red grape of the renowned Rioja region of Spain and due to the regions similarity to Heathcote from a viticultural perspective, Sanguine Estate planted tempranillo in 2002. This is Sanguine Estate’s first vintage of this variety and shows such promise that further plantings are anticipated.
The 2004 Tempranillo displays characters of wild strawberry, cherries and red currants with a hint of liquorice and a herbal character typical of the variety. The palate has wonderful mid palate fruit, well balanced acid and tannin and a spicy herbal finish that lingers. A food friendly wine that will gain additional complexity with bottle age. |

Sanguine Estate ’s 2004 Merlot is exclusive to mailing list customers . Originally planted to be used in a classic Cabernet blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot however after many tastings it was concluded that this first vintage of Merlot was too good on its own to blend.
The Merlot displays soft luscious aromas of plum and cherry with hints of musk, violets and the typical leafy character of Merlot. The palate is soft with plum and cherry flavours and savoury finish. |

Progeny, meaning descendants of, is a wine produced by the children of the founders of Sanguine Estate. Following in their parents footsteps, they have adopted hand crafting techniques to create a wine of quality and distinction.
Produced from vines adjoining Sanguine Estate, the second vintage of Progeny displays complex aromas of ripe red berries, plum, spice and dry herb. The palate follows up with a mix of red berries, plum spice and a hint of liquorice.
The balanced acid and tannin structure results in a wine that can be enjoyed now and will continue to improve with age.
Nicks Wine Merchants Rating: 91 out of 100
The Progeny is produced by Tony Hunter’s kids. Tony and his wife Lyn run Sanguine Estate, which is planted on Cambrian earth. The Progeny soil profile differs from Sanguine, with the vines being planted on the leaner buckshot soils that are also found in the Heathcote district.
Totally opaque black purple colour with black purple hue. Aroma of liquorice allsorts, blackberry and spice followed by endnotes of dark chocolate and mint. Generous palate with flavours of plum, prune, stewed fruit and spice. Dry chalky tannins. Moderate length, with plum, stewed fruit aftertaste.
Value: 4/5 Cellar:4-5yrs (2009-2010)
